Media is Used to Create a Stage Presence and People Respond
Marilyn entered the public eye with shocking makeup and shocking dance moves and shocking lyrics and shocking memoir-like mostly untrue life stories. BBC News has noticed Manson's upheaval and his way to fame through "on-stage antics - reputed to include sex acts and smoking human bones."
Who Cares?
There are two types of people when it comes to Marilyn: those who care and those who don’t. The people who care are either the gullible rebellious depressed teenagers or they are the over protective God-fearing parents. They both absorb the same minute twisted horribly disgusting details of Marilyn’s life, but they react in two different ways. Here’s how:
Gullible and rebellious, hundreds of depressed teenagers and young adults regurgitate Marilyn’s gruesome tales to their friends, and they all appallingly love and envy and aspire to become and look like the gruesome man who embraces his gothic pasty-white corpse-like appearance accented by his clear-eyed contact and black-red lipstick and black eye makeup and bondage-inspired clothing.
Overprotective and god-fearing, many parents avoid listening to Marilyn’s music or watching any stories on him or allowing their children to know who he is. Tending to overreact, they quickly change the channel or throw away the paper whenever they see Marilyn in the media because they firmly believe he is the horribly violent devil-worshipping satanic individual as described in their always true and never faulty entertainment news. These are the people who join the right-wing groups and have even gone so far as try to ban Manson from performing in their cities and blame him for Columbine (BBC News). They fear and hate him.
Who Doesn't?
The remaining half of the population are skeptics, some fans, some not. Recognizing the act and façade Marilyn uses to intimidate the public, they are the ones that realize that people can have both a public life and a private life.
The Reality
Marilyn has stated in multiple interviews published in the NY Rock that he purposely presents himself as different in order to stand out and to entertain people, not necessarily to shock them. There he is admitting that his music and his clothing and his actions are a form of his personal artwork to display for the public. Nothing more, nothing less.
The Drama
So why is there so much drama? The fact is, Marilyn’s bizarre appearance with white and black makeup and unnaturally raven-black hair and black fingernails and creepy-looking contacts that are never quite the same and the horrendously ugly black outfits are too extreme for the public to completely disregard.
Who is He?
Marilyn Manson is a modern-day Alice Cooper, who shocked the public in the 70’s, as Marilyn in shocking the public now.
Even though an extreme public persona isn’t widely accepted, even though not all artists can please everyone in their audience, even though having two separate public and private personalities may seem deceitful, Marilyn Mason accepts his public identity for its entertainment value and is no more of a hypocrite than our politicians.
