Korn co-founder Brian Welch has enjoyed amazing notoriety in the music industry. A change of heart, however, prompted him to walk away at the height of his success.

Korn’s Brian ‘Head’ Welch has seen numerous changes in his professional life in recent years. More profound, however, have been the changes in his personal life. Decisions such as walking away from the influential band he helped form, kicking a massive drug habit, and dedicating his life to the Lord have all transformed Welch into the man he is today.

Welch Leaves Korn

Korn co-founder and guitarist Brian Welch stunned the music world when he announced he was leaving the band in 2005. One of the major influences in the rise of the Nu Metal Movement, Korn has sold over 30 million records world wide since forming in 1993.

Welch won two Grammy Awards and enjoyed multi-platinum album sales with the wildly successful group, which contributed to fans’ surprise at his decision to resign. In a Feb. 25, 2005, interview with MTV’s James Montgomery, Welch explains, “I have a six year old daughter, and I want her to be able to look me in the eye.” Further, he states that he quit in order to focus on raising her as a single father, had become weary of "chasing the almighty buck,” and felt that earning her respect was more of a priority than being wealthy.

‘Head’ Gets Clean and Finds God

Welch’s rock star lifestyle brought him fame and fortune. It also brought, however, a whirlwind downward spiral into drug and alcohol addiction. Welch recounts his struggle to kick his methamphetamine habit in his best selling book Save Me from Myself: How I Found God, Quit Korn, Kicked Drugs, and Lived to Tell My Story.

Welch credits his faith with allowing him the strength to get off drugs. In an Aug. 13, 2007, Christian Music Today article by Troy Anderson titled "Head Joins the Body," Welch states, “Within a couple of weeks, I was off drugs and feeling good, which is unheard of when you’re a speed addict.”

In addition, he has elaborated on his inspiring journey with the release of a second book, Washed by the Blood: Lessons from My Time with Korn and My Journey to Christ.

Brian ‘Head’ Welch – Soldier for Christ

Since leaving Korn, getting off drugs, and dedicating his life to God, Welch has found a new focus. With a new album, Save Me from Myself, released in 2008, he has begun to delve into music again although the sound is a bit softer than that of Korn. The single, “Flush,” debuted at #13 on Billboard’s Hard Music Chart.

He has also committed to inspire and educate youth on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. He regularly speaks about his faith, participating in several media events geared toward the religious community.

Additionally, he considers himself a “walking billboard for Christ,” displaying his faith-based tattoos often. He is covered in art which references various Bible verses and imagery. He even has the words “Jesus” and “Love” tattooed on his fingers, “Soldier 4 Christ” on his stomach, and “Father” on his arm.

Brian ‘Head’ Welch has enjoyed the height of rock and roll success. He has found, however, that he is happiest when focused on being a devoted father, raising awareness of the dangers of addiction, and professing his love for God. Welch’s story proves that money can’t buy gratification, and true fulfillment comes from living a life one can be proud of.
