Depeche Mode premiered its first track, Wrong, from their new album Sounds of the Universe at the February 2009 Echo 2009 awards in Berlin, Germany.

This marks the 12th studio album for the 80's British new wave artists. Incredibly to their fans, and as a first for Depeche Mode, the album will be released as a special deluxe edition three CD/DVD box set containing bonus songs, remixes, 14 demos and three films.

Opening track Wrong is proof that Depeche Mode songwriter Martin Gore has returned to his 1980s roots. It features the band’s signature highly synthesized staccato beats, flowing baseline and spotlights the power and range of Dave Gahan’s voice.

Veteran fans will perhaps be most struck by Martin Gore’s pristine back-up vocals that soar near the song’s end. His vocal participation at the climax then denouement of the tune is reminiscent of I Feel Loved from the band last album, Exciter, released in 2007.

Depeche Mode Lyrics Feature Pain, Turmoil

Best of all, the band's fans will relate to Wrong as a song that is true to the angst and inner pain that characterizes lyrics of the best Depeche Mode songs. Precious, a song released on the band’s Playing the Angel, album speaks to the same type of human suffering as Martin Gore writes of children caught up in the pain of their parents' divorce with the lyrics:

Things get damaged/Things get broken/I thought we'd manage/But words left unspoken/Left us so brittle/There was so little left to give

Similarly, Wrong is a tribute to poorly made decisions, with the opening verse establishing a series of mistakes from life’s beginning:

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong/I was born with the wrong sign, in the wrong house/With the wrong ascendency/I took the wrong road, that lead to/The wrong tendencies/I was in the wrong place, at the wrong time/For the wrong reason and the wrong rhyme/On the wrong day, of the wrong week/Used the wrong manner with the wrong technique
