Coachella Music Festival Celebrates First Decade

The biggest surprise in the 2009 lineup, one that includes Coldplay, The Beastie Boys, Prince, Radiohead and Franz Ferdinand, is the addition of Paul McCartney.
The former Beatle will perform new material from Electric Arguments, a new album released under the Fireman alias he shares with producer and musician Youth.
Another surprise was the last-minute addition of rapper M.I.A. as a substitute for Amy Winehouse. This will be rapper’s third time performing at Coachella and her first major performance since her inspirational live appearance at the 2009 Grammys with TI, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne.
Coachella Music Festival Tickets Offer Layaway Option
The internationally respected festival prides itself on offering value for the fans’ entertainment dollar and in 2009, continued a one-day and three-day pass. New in 2009, however, was a ticket layaway option that allowed those pressed for the immediate cash a chance to pay incrementally. Annually, about 140,000 fans flock to the three-day festival, held in 2009 from April 17 to 19.
Coachella also prides itself on satisfying the spectrum of artistic tastes from British industrial post-apocalyptic music/visual arts group Throbbing Gristle, a group together for an incredible 30 years, to poet and musician Leonard Cohen, legend Paul Weller of The Jam and Style Council fame, and New Wave icons The Cure.
Rock Music Festival Tickets Entry to See Top Artists and Indie Favorites
The Killers add to the mainstream offerings as well as alternative music’s Morrissey, formerly of The Smiths. Canadian rocker Billy Talent is joined by compatriots and hardcore punk band F***cked Up and English Indie Folk duo the Ting Tings.
Other hotly anticipated performances by indie alternate groups include high energy American rockers Cage The Elephant, Tinariwen, a rhythm and blues breakthrough Arabic rock back and TRAV$DJ-AM, a rock drummer and disc jockey.
The long lineup also includes Californian neo-psychedelic rock band Brian Jonestown Massacre, Ireland alternative rock shoegazers My Bloody Valentine, and Texas folk rock artists Okkervil River.
Public Enemy takes on the crowd with its hip hop political message as well as The Horrors, a British post punk rock band, The Skills, a German rock band, The Night Marchers, a U.S. Alternative rock band and Themselves, a British indie rock group.
Coachella Festival Environmental Focus
The visual arts side of the festival includes TRASHed, an opportunity for artist to design one of the recycling bins at Coachella to be used in Los Angeles schools.
The festival’s environmental consciousness continues with a string of bio-diesel buses transporting 300 people more than 1800 miles to engage a new generation of activists. The Dirty Hands Caravan, the brainchild of actor Sean Penn, includes people working in community service such as building houses for homeless, protesting the Iraq war while supporting veterans and their families and cleaning up parks.
The Coachella Music Festival has a worldwide reputation as a fun event that in its first decade, has proven itself by featuring artists and musicians from the unknown to the internationally famous. The 2009 lineup stays true to its music festival roots with a range of performances appealing to all tastes.
