The 50th Annual Grammy Awards were handed out last night in Los Angeles with troubled British tabloid darling, Amy Winehouse, the night's biggest winner.

Amy Winehouse, nominated for 6 Grammy Awards including the coveted Record of the Year, walked away with 5 trophies at last night’s awards show held in Los Angeles.

The year’s biggest nominated artist, Kanye West, who had a total of 8, took home a respectable 4 awards.

But in an odd twist that can only be explained as a ‘Typical Grammy Moment”, both Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black and Kanye West’s Graduation bizarrely lost Album of the Year to River: The Joni Letters by Herbie Hancock.

Amy Winehouse Best New Artist

A stylish Cindi Lauper and Miley Cyrus presented Amy Winehouse, who wasn’t in attendance due to visa restrictions, with the Best New Artist award early in the show.

Canadian songbird Nelly Furtado lost Best Female Pop Vocal Performance to Winehouse, but later in the show presented her with the Song Of The Year - A Songwriter’s Award, for “Rehab”.

Amy Winehouse also walked away with Best Pop Vocal Album for Back To Black, shutting out established artists Paul McCartney and Grammy favs Bon Jovi as well as Canadian Feist who also lost Best New Artist to Winehouse.

After a last-minute decision, Winehouse performed “You know I’m No Good” live via satellite from a London studio. Recently plagued by drunken antics and spotty performances, a cleaner Winehouse presented a funky, fast-paced rendition of the song as well as a dancey, sing along version of “Rehab”.

After her high-power performance, Winehouse gave her thanks, but the confident performer shrunk into a shy little girl and spoke in a low child-like voice, her head down coyly.

Following her set, one of the best performances of the night, Amy Winehouse won the coveted Record of the Year beating out Beyoncé, Foo Fighters and Justin Timberlake. Stunned, she muttered a thank you but her utter amazement resonated through her words

Kanye West Best Rap Artist

The ever present Kanye West, dazzled in a glow-in-the-dark performance of “Stronger” a song for which he won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo. Then, he toned it down for a simple and emotional version of “Mama”, a song dedicated to his late mother.

True to fashion, the egocentric rap star shunned the award show producers when music interrupted his overindulgent acceptance speech for Best Rap Solo Award, and later told Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse that if he did not accept the Album of the Year award he would be happy for them to receive it “because you deserve it too”.

Kanye West, the night’s most nomated artist with a total of 8, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year as well as Best Rap / Sung Collaboration, which he lost to Rihanna featuring Jay-Z, took home 4 awards.
